Tales of a Veteran Cosmic Rocker

April 28, 2016

Welcome friends to my new blog, Psychedelic Waves. The idea here is to create a blog about psychedelic music and related styles that is more than just a review blog. To be sure, there will be reviews of new albums, but also, hopefully, some fresh insight on some older albums, plus news, interviews, opinion articles, and the thing that I hope will make my blog a little different: I plan on sharing little anecdotes from my musical life. I love telling stories, and I have a lot of them to tell.

I encourage you to join me on this musical journey, to not just learn about the latest grooves in psychedelic rock, but to experience what writer Tom Knox called ‘psychic music’. This is more the music of life’s less tangible experiences; the music that allows you to stare with wonder at the sunrise or spin around, arms out, in sudden ecstasy just because you feel like it.  Psychic music is that indefinable quality of human spirit, that thing we hear not with our ears but with our conscious and unconscious minds, that drives us forward to find new experiences and to connect with the universe. I think that’s part of why we love this kind of music, isn’t it? It brings the magic of that intangible universe from out there, right into us.

So, a little about me. My name is Jeff Fitzgerald. As the title of this article suggests, I’ve been a fan cosmic music for over 35 years.  I’m a musician; more of a hobby than a career, but still a passion of mine. I’m one half of the space prog duo The Star Diaries and also part of the Arcturus Strange collective. I’m a former broadcaster, and have produced and hosted radio shows such as Electronic Realizations for 7 years on CKMS-FM and Prog World for 2 years on River Gibbs FM.  As well, I also wrote for 15 years for Jerry Kranitz’s awesome space rock webzine Aural Innovations. I also write fantasy, sci-fi and horror stories.

I’m sure that the whole concept of this website will grow with time, and I’m excited to see where it will go. No rules here, just possibilities, so I hope you’ll join me on the expedition.
